How to Have Your Own Unique Fashion Style

Are you ready to break out and find your very own fashion style? Everyone has his or her own unique fashion sense. Don't just blindly follow the trends set by someone else. Here are some tips for you to help you search for the fashion that speaks of who you are.

First and foremost, to be able to make a fashion statement about yourself, it is important that you figure out your personality. Are you the fun, quirky type, the serious "brainy" type, or the athletic type? There are many different types of personalities, and discovering who you are will most definitely pave the way to discovering your own fashion style.

Go through your closet and separate the clothes you want to keep and those that you don't. Check out the clothes you want to keep because they may help you in choosing the style that you want to have. At this point, you can either create a style that is based on your current clothes, or create one that is entirely new.

Be creative! Do not just think of fashion based on the norm or the current trend. Remember you're making a fashion statement about yourself, so be brave and try different match-ups even if your friends may think it's strange. Remember that not everything you try would be perfect. But at least you can learn from those errors and then improve because of them.

Choose colors and patterns that you think represent who you are. Having a signature color or pattern might make things easier for you when choosing your style or fashion. Use different accessories to compliment the clothes you wear. A simple accessory such as a bandana can define your style if you use it the right way.

It's also not a bad idea to study different styles, not to copy them but to get different ideas from different stylists. Watch the fashion of celebrities, read fashion magazines and walk around the mall and check out the latest styles on sale. This will help you choose which styles you like and those you don't.

Remember that choosing a style is not just about being different. Choosing your own type of fashion should be about being comfortable and being confident in wearing your clothes. If you feel embarrassed or awkward wearing something, then that style is probably something you should avoid.

Finding a unique style that is just for you needs a lot of time, a lot of sweat, and probably a lot of misses. But if you have the will and the determination, you can certainly achieve that goal. Coming up with your own fashion style may not be a piece of cake, but it will definitely be worth the effort.

Basic Wardrobe Planning is Easier If You Know Your Fashion Style - 3 Benefits & 8 Fashion Archetypes

Basic wardrobe planning may be more cohesive if you figure out your fashion style type. Some types of fashion, offered with the over-50 woman in mind, are:

  • arty or bohemian
  • sophisticated
  • sporty
  • suburban
  • professional
  • simply elegant (or elegant simplicity)
  • trendy or trend-setter.
  • romantic or sexy.

I call these fashion styles fashion archetypes, because they embody deeper needs and behaviors of our personalities. Expressing one of the types of fashion is a way of becoming the star of our own lives.

As we age, we may have to reassess our fashion style: The suburban mom takes a job and needs a professional wardrobe; the lawyer retires from her professional career and takes up her dream of landscape painting. The suits have to go.

Here are three advantages of basic wardrobe planning around a type of fashion that suits your personality and lifestyle:

  • Efficiency shopping and pulling an outfit together, even on the fly.
  • If you decide your fashion style is sporty, you're less likely to splurge on that emerald green, ruffled jabot blouse that you will only wear once a year. After all, it hardly goes with the khaki and charcoal cotton slacks that are the core of your comfortable daily uniform.
  • Spending limited wardrobe budgets on what will give us the most use. Basic wardrobe planning involves figuring out what types of fashion we most need. It makes sense to add a black skirt to our professional wardrobe when we understand we've got 18 tops and three jackets to team with it. Shopping for an item we might have spurned as too ordinary becomes a fashion triumph.
  • Feeling well-dressed and comfortable on every occasion. The best fashion advice for women is to decide what feels good and looks good on you. Your personal fashion style emerges from that. What looks and feels good changes over time. Periodic reassessment is essential.

Here's a summary of eight fashion archetypes.

ARTY/BOHEMIAN

The arty look is colorful, quirky, sometimes ethnic, and always fearless. Natural fabrics are preferred. A snowy white poet's shirt, an embroidered jacket that goes from work to art gallery reception, and a luxurious handbag are suggestions for the bohemian wardrobe.

SOPHISTICATED

The corporate executive wife and the charity fund-raiser are some typical lifestyle choices of women who express their inner creativity with sophisticated fashions. Wardrobe suggestions are a Chanel suit, a silk dress, gold cloche earrings and a diamond pendant necklace.

SPORTY

This fashion style is tailored. A blazer jacket is a must. It can be worn with a variety of durable, washable cotton pants, such as khaki, a good choice for the active, outdoorsy woman. Sweaters and sweater sets work well. A silk T-shirt adds sophistication. Avoid fussy prints and ruffles.

SUBURBAN

Suburban fashion goes from town to country with ease. She visits a corporate office in tailored slacks, a fuchsia shirt, an elegantly tailored long jacket, and pumps appropriate for lunch at a chic restaurant. Then she's off to a soccer game. The pumps are replaced by rubber-soled loafers, the jacket with a sweater. Pick garments for their versatility.

PROFESSIONAL

The professional fashion archetype loves suits - pantsuits for every day, skirt suits for court, a tuxedo suit for formal occasions, and a tailored dress when a skirt is a must. Choose suits and tops so you can mix-and-match for maximum versatility. Add an embroidered vest for pizzazz.

SIMPLY ELEGANT

If you've asked yourself What Would Jackie [Kennedy Onassis] Do?(book by Shelley Branch and Sue Callaway) Or What Would Audrey [Hepburn] Do? (by Pamela Keough), this is your fashion archetype. Stock your closet with solid colors and garments with simple lines such as the A-line, princess, and cheongsam dresses. Shop at designer consignment shops to achieve this look on a budget.

TRENDY/TREND-SETTER

The older woman who adopts the latest fashion trends may end up looking as if she is desperately clinging to her passing youth. For best effect, add fashion trends to classic costumes. For example, an outrageous jacket, with lots of bling and some feather accents, might be worn with simple black or white beneath. Experiment. Every fashion mistake can be changed tomorrow.

ROMANTIC

Flirty grows up after 50 or risks appearing as if life has passed her by. Ruffles, but not frills; clinging fabrics that hug curves without being skintight; and decollete that knows when to quit are hallmarks of the romantic fashion archetype. Strive for glamor and sensuality using texture and a bit of bling.

Take this fashion archetype quiz to learn more.

In summary, knowing and expressing your fashion archetype starts with identifying the fashion styles that fit your lifestyle and personality. Buy clothes that look and feel just right. Basic wardrobe planning is a snap when we build our clothes collection with our personal type of fashion in mind.

Both Practicality and Fashion Style Can Be Obtained by Carrying Tote Bags

More and more women love to use tote bags, because of their practicality and fashionable style. Usually, tote bags are designed to be in large size, which can enable people to carry more things that you may happen to buy at the supermarkets apart from basic personal necessities. For daily use, totes are top choices for women to create trendy and fashionable styles.

Generally speaking, leather is the most preferable material used to make totes. With the material of leather, the quality of the bags can be firmly ensured. Since totes are supposed to carry many things from personal stuff to unexpected items bought anywhere, the quality and durability should be seriously reliable. On the other hand, when you are buying a tote, you need to check the straps to see whether they are made of real leather and whether they can bear the weight of heavy things. If the straps fail to meet the needs, the quality of the bag should be questioned. Sometimes, you can also find tote handbags are made from cotton or canvas.

The design of totes can vary a lot. Still, regarding the practical purpose, many totes are designed with several pockets inside and outside, some with zips on them. Some totes have adjustable straps, which provide great convenience to busy women. The straps of bags in different styles are attached to the bags in different ways, some with the use of clasps and some with buckles.

Without doubt, designer totes always turn out to be top choices for women. You will have no worries about both the style and quality. However, even though the bag is flawless in design and style, you should be careful with the pairing. Only when you pair the bag with the outfit in proper way will the whole style become eye-popping.

Fashion Style Guide For Men

I'm sure you've noticed that all over magazines, TV and the internet lately, the focus is on fall, fall, fall. We're starting to think about football, Thanksgiving and all of the other terrific things that autumn brings. This also means that you should start to think about transitioning the items in your closet. Although the weather may not yet feel cooler in your corner of the country, it will get there soon. And you will want to be ready to approach the season in style.

When it comes to men's fashion, the area where a lot of men fall short is in assembling a wardrobe with variety. You'll notice that any time a male celebrity is cited in the news for his great style, he has a visually interesting, varied, and often colorful outfit. In putting together a stylish wardrobe, you'll need to include elements of color, pattern and texture.

If you are one who normally has a difficult time assembling a wardrobe that you feel good in, start from the bottom and work up. It can be a lot less intimidating to shop for shoes than other items of clothing, such as pants and suits. Plus, depending on what types of shoes you prefer, this can help to dictate the rest of your stylish look.

A great shoe style for fall of 2011 is a brown suede or leather derby shoe. This is shoe style is truly classic, and can easily be dressed up or down. A good suede shoe will also add the crucial element of texture to your outfit. Now, continue to build up. Your wardrobe of pants should include dark wash denim, flat front khakis, and corduroys. Cord is an excellent fabric for fall, and can be found in all sorts of interesting colors. Don't be afraid to try something different, such as olive green, burnt orange, plum, or mustard. This would, of course, bring in your element of color.

Now for your top half, an excellent and stylish look for fall is to dress in layers. A look that is great for this fall is to layer a cardigan sweater over a button down shirt or a ribbed cotton tee shirt. Are you cringing at the word "cardigan" because it makes you think of Mr. Rogers? Just look for a cardigan that fits snuggly and isn't bulky to avoid looking dated. If you find a material, whether it is cotton or wool, that bulges, place the sweater back on the shelf and keep looking. If you are more of a jacket person, look for a cotton and wool sports jacket, and a great faux or real leather jacket in a shade of brown, camel, or reddish brown. These are staples that can be layered over nearly any outfit.

As you shop for shirts, resist the urge to buy the same plain tee shirt in a whole stack of different colors. Your shirt wardrobe definitely needs variety. Plus, ties are an essential for a stylish wardrobe, and you can't try out a variety of interesting tie knotsif all you wear is tee shirts. Don't be afraid to wear a patterned dress shirt with a tie of a different pattern. It will work as long as the patterns are in the same color family. This goes for patterns such as paisley and stripes; Glen-Plaid and polka dots; and even polka dots and stripes, which was traditionally thought of as a faux pas. Just anchor the look with neutral pants and perhaps a neutral colored jacket. If you prefer to use pattern in a more subtle way, stick to just one patterned element, such as an argyle scarf looped around your neck.

Remember, the key to building a stylish wardrobe is to include color, pattern, and texture. Don't be afraid to experiment with new fabrics and looks this fall.

Emma Watson's Fashion Style So Far

Emma Watson rose to fame playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series. From 2001 (and at the tender age of nine), the young starlet has literally been growing up before our eyes, and although she's proved herself as a hugely talented and critically acclaimed actress, it's her fashion sense that's really been taking centre stage recently.

It was glaringly obvious from her red carpet appearances that Emma's fashion choices and style were getting better and better as the years progressed, but it was in 2008 when she really started becoming a major player in the fashion world. Not only was she popping up in all the 'best dressed' lists and in the front row of many major fashion shows, but there was a lot of speculation that she was going to replace Keira Knightley as the new face of Chanel.

Despite persistent rumours linking her to Chanel, and her ubiquitous presence at international fashion shows, it was actually announced that Emma (aged just 19) had landed the contract as the new face of Burberry. Filling the shoes of Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn, she fronted the Burberry Autumn/Winter 2009 campaign and proved she could carve out a figure as a leading style icon as well as a top actress.

The campaign, which was photographed by Mario Testino, features Watson in clothing from the Burberry autumn/winter collection, which was inspired by Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury set.

At the time, Burberry's creative director Christopher Bailey described the young star as the "obvious choice" for the campaign, stating;

"Emma has a classic beauty, a great character and a modern edge. Her charm, intellect and brilliant sense of fun made the whole shoot feel like a picnic on the Thames"

Following her success in the Burberry campaign (where was reported to receive a 6 figure sum), she later appeared in the 2010 Spring/Summer campaign alongside her brother Alex.

At this point in time, one wouldn't blame the actress if she chose to spend her Harry Potter afterlife as a full-time clothes horse, but instead she chose to flex her considerable fashion flair by creating a range for the ethical clothing brand People Tree. This was a savvy move - People Tree has some serious fashion cred, and up to this point clothing with a conscience had never felt quite so on trend.

In February 2010 the collection was launched and Emma was quoted as saying:

"It is hard to know what is good and what is bad on the high street and equally hard to find fashionable or youthful ethical clothing, so I decided to work with People Tree to put together a collection I could be proud of in terms of both ethics and design"

Following her success in fashion, the star also proved she was just as hot in the beauty industry when she became the new face of LancĂ´me cosmetics in March 2011.

Company president Youcef Nabi went on to gush about Emma stating;

"Thanks to her charm, romanticism and her incredible modernity, she has become the icon of her generation"

The actress stepped up her fashionable status just before the Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows; Part Two promotional duties recently when she graced the cover of the July 2011 edition of American Vogue.

Looking all grown-up and glamorous she modelled a chic Prada Fall 2011 dress accessorized with a pair of bangles by Ben-Amun and a cute flower ring.

Bagging the cover of American Vogue was a massive testament to her fashion muse status, especially when you take into consideration that the sophisticated photos were taken by the famous photographer Mario Testino and the creations came from designers Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana.

It's important to note that she was just turning 21 on the day that American Vogue interviewed her for the scoop to accompany her first cover. Even style goddess Sienna Miller only managed her first cover at the age of 26.

Since earning herself mega-star status, Emma Watson has become quite the fashionista and is admired as much for her preppy off-duty style, as she is for her polished red carpet appearances. Indeed it would seem fashion designers are clamouring to dress the star as she's just finished the promotional trail for the new Harry Potter film, wearing a range of designers from Balmain & Oscar de la Renta to Valentino and Elie Saab.

Taking into account her appearance in American Vogue, her recent red-carpet outfits, & any of 2011's best-dressed lists, one fact is unmistakable: the fashion world just can't get enough of the Harry Potter star. She may have grown up in a Hogwarts uniform, but she's blossomed into everyone's favourite British starlet and looks set to become an icon. I can't wait to see what she does-and wears- next.

Men's Fashion Styles That Women Absolutely Hate

Men and women have different fashion sense, and that's the norm of course, but sometimes we need to take a cue from each other. Most men, for example, are known to have lousy taste when it comes to their fashion choices. That's why they would be able to benefit tremendously from some real tips and advice from women.

There are choices of style and clothing for men that are totally frowned upon by the opposite sex. It would come in handy to know about these fashion violations especially if your aim in trying to be fashionable is to attract females in the first place.

Here are just some men's fashion styles that women hate:

Socks and Sandals- There is never a good reason to wear socks with sandals. Socks are meant for shoes and closed footwear and sandals are meant for bare feet. Pairing these two together goes against their very nature.

Wearing them makes you look like a fool and women would rightfully think that you have no sense of fashion at all.

Mesh Shirt- Try to think of ways where wearing a mesh shirt can be considered to be hot. If you can think of any situation then that means you have an absolutely horrible fashion sense and that you have been committing equally horrid fashion crimes all your life. Try to rethink your whole idea of fashion.

Fanny Packs- Admittedly, the idea for the fanny pack is quite a good one, especially for a practical fellow who'd like everything handy. It's kind of like Batman's Utility Belt. Unfortunately, wearing a fanny pack in reality is a bad idea and could make you look like a total dork.

Skinny Jeans- This is one of the instances where we would see the vast difference between men's and women's fashion. Girls wearing skinny jeans is simply hot. The tighter the jeans, the better.

When a guy wears skinny jeans, it never looks right. It especially looks odd when we see the guy struggling to move around since the pants are obviously way too tight for what is considered comfortable.

Short Shorts- Do we have to explain this? Grown men walking around wearing short shorts is not something that we want to see in our normal waking lives. Hairy fat legs is a little but more than we can take.

There is really no situation that would justify that. Even the most intense weather is not good enough.

Logos Everywhere- Some guys are just way too drawn by the power of logos. They wear anything that has a huge logo emblazoned on it. Somehow, that makes them feel trendy and classy

It gets worse when you buy everything from the same brand. Even product endorsers don't wear everything from the same company.

Sideways Baseball Cap- The wearing of a baseball cap is already questionable when you are not engaged in any sport or any activity that requires you to have sun protection. Wearing it sideways is just the height of being crass. You should never wear it that way.

'Down With Love' Movie Fashion Style

Whenever I need an inspiration for color in fashion, I always revisit my beloved movie 'Down with Love'. This frivolously delicious and hilarious movie, starring Rennee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, has itself become a bit of a vintage movie. It is a spoof on the Doris Day and Rock Hudson comedies of the 60s.

The bubbly blonde and the dark, handsome guy, with the 'girl trying to work hard to get somewhere' kind of story line. It certainly makes a very deserving 'chick flick', perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon. However, the main attractions for me are the costumes. Make no mistake, this is certainly forward thinking in terms of the whole vintage thing. I guess the craze about 'Mad Men' really started with this movie.

The costumes were designed by Daniel Orlandi. I am extremely impressed with the fact that it had no real vintage clothing at all. All of the costumes were complete re-designs, fitted and turned into the funny colorful feast of a movie. The whole movie is a nonstop extravaganza of fashion display, overloaded with rainbow colors, beautiful fabrics, and matching outfits. I adore the ensemble of a pink and white wool jacket, over a super-fitted wool dress, matching the color of the jacket and topped with a pair of white gloves for style.

Daniel Orlandi must have read all the magazines from the years 62-67 to draw his inspirations for the movie. "We didn't want to use vintage clothes on Renee, or any of the other principals, because we didn't want it to look shabby," says Orlandi, who instead used vintage fabric for many of his designs. "We wanted the clothes to seem fun and surprising, not campy."

It definitely does not look 'thrift shop', in fact the cut and fit for both actors are simply amazing. Apparently, he intentionally designed the garments with lots of vibrant colors, even though they were not traditional colors for a blonde. I think the bright colors agreed with Renee very well, reflecting on her character and the comedy plot. The riot of colors, lavender, lime, fuchsia, snow-white, magenta and ice blue are certainly a feast for the eyes.

Don't be afraid to copy the fashion of this movie though. All the expertly matched outfits, certainly put all of us who wear a GAP tee shirt and jeans to shame. We could always lighten ourselves up with a brightly colored scarf, a fitted dress with neat tucking details, or a pair of snazzy pumps. We should never be afraid of color, after all we can still wear the classic black coat. Get out there and wear those color and treat your friends to a colorful feast.

Fashion Styles to Avoid

When you are out buying clothes for yourself not only do you want to know about what kind of clothing is in style, but you also need to find out about what is not in style. Avoiding the clothing that is not in style is easy to do, if you know what to avoid. What you need to remember is that it is not just an article of clothing that needs to be avoided in general, sometimes the piece of clothing can be worn fashionably, but there are certain things you want to avoid wearing it with.

One thing that you need to avoid is wearing high waisted jeans or any kind of high waisted pants. One of the reasons that you want to avoid these types of pants is because of how high up they go, if your belly button is pierced, it can rub against the piercing that can become very uncomfortable. Another problem is if you have any kind of bloating going on this style of pants can make the bloating seem even worse than it is, which is not very flattering at all.

Something else that you need to avoid doing is wearing a white bra with a white shirt. This needs to be avoided because you can clearly see the white bra under the white shirt; in fact, the white bra really stands out under the white shirt because the lines of the bra show directly through the shirt. When wearing a white shirt you will want to wear a nude colored bra so that the bra does not show as easily.

Not only do you need to think about the color bra you are wearing but you also need to think about the type of panties that you are wearing. With jeans you can wear just about any style of panties that you want, but stay away from thongs that stick up from the back of your jeans because it does not look very attractive. If you are wearing white pants you want to avoid wearing dark colored panties or even panties with designs on them because they will show directly through the pants. Your best choice is to wear a nude color rather than white because it will blend in better than the white will.

What you wear on your feet is also important. The worst thing you can do is wear any kind of socks with sandals, and depending on the style of sandal, you might want to avoid nylons. Thong-toed sandals or shoes should be worn without socks or nylons, while open toed and closed toed should be worn with nylons or socks. White socks with black shoes also need to be avoided.

Designer Tips For Fashion Styling - Mix and Match Your Way to Chic

When people find out that I'm a fashion designer, aside from the cliche assumption that I design and make my clothes (which I don't!), they usually presume that I have a particular clothing style and that I spend a lot of money when I shop for clothes. In reality, neither of these misconceptions is true. I don't have a defined fashion style. The way I dress depends greatly on occasion, location, season, current trends, time of the day, and my mood. Many times, I'll actually use fashion styling to get myself in a certain mood. When I'm asked for styling advice, I'll reply with "How do you want to feel?" I think fashion and styling posses a power that can make you feel a certain way. In this article, I'll share a few "Designer Tips" on fashion styling. I'll start with some very important fashion advice- how to shop for clothes.

Since my outfits usually turn a few heads, people assume they are really expensive- yet another false impression. Not to say that I won't occasionally splurge on something expensive; I just appreciate a good bargain when I see one. The only time I'll overpay for an item is when I LOVE it and I know I won't be able to find it anywhere else. Like the Diesel jacket I bought for $165. It was exactly what I was looking for and I knew that no one else would make something even remotely similar. Casual, but chic; sporty, but girly - I knew it would last for a few seasons. That's actually one of my fashion shopping rules: if I pay more than $150 for something, it has to last for a few seasons. If I'm shopping for something very trendy that will probably be "in" for only one season, I won't spend more than $100, better yet, no more than $50.

So how do I manage to look expensive? Designer tip number one is good fit. If something doesn't fit right, no matter how cheap it is - I won't buy it. Why would I wear something that pulls and gathers in the wrong places and looks awkward on me? It doesn't matter how much salespeople try to "help", and say it's not noticeable. I notice, and others will too. They might not be able to pinpoint exactly what bothers them, but they'll notice something's off. The same concept goes for details and accents - many people think they don't notice little details, but they do. Some details may not stand out on their own, but they definitely contribute to overall appearance.

Once I went on a blind date wearing a plain black jersey skirt slightly below the knee that I bought for $20. I paired it with a black tank that had a touch of lace ($15), and killer looking shoes. They were pointy high heels in faded metallic pink, which created a vintage look ($55, a lucky bargain buy!). Two men accused me of trying to cause a traffic accident as I crossed the street! Men and (more remarkably) women were turning their heads. Needless to say, my blind date was more then relieved! His first remark to me was that he "loved stylish women". Bottom line: my outfit was totally chic- and all under $100.

Another shopping tip: to make an ordinary outfit look chic, I'll throw in something expensive, such as an accessory. I went to a party wearing a black jersey dress with bishop sleeves ($25), and accented it with a hip shaped beaded belt I bought in London for almost $250. I know it sounds overpriced, but that belt breathed new life into a lot of older outdated garments that I loved dearly. I had this gorgeous chiffon dress that I bought 7 years ago. I loved the mysterious color effect created by layers of different color fabrics and the way the skirt flared. Even after the silhouette went out of style, I couldn't bear to part with that dress! By adding my beaded belt, I successfully reshaped the dress creating a low waist retro kind of look, and wore it to my best friend's wedding- with complements!

The truth is that I love fashion, and I love women. It makes me happy when I can make a difference in their often complicated, yet extraordinary lives. Ladies, keep in mind when it comes to fashion, nothing is written in stone. What is a fashion disaster today may be on the runway tomorrow, and vice versa.
